Capitol Christmas Tree 2009
Outdoor Ornament Program
Facts:
Arizona has been given the unique honor to provide the 2009 Capitol Christmas Tree. The
effort, coordinated by the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, Apache Natural Resources
Conservation District, businesses, and community partners, will result in a gift to the nation that
is from our entire state.
The perfect 65-foot Christmas tree will be decorated with approximately 4,000 handcrafted
ornaments made by school children. The program represents a unique partnership between the
Arizona Public Education Department, students, and community.
The U S Forest Service Conservation Education is developing templates and sample lesson plans
for ornament design. Separate templates and lesson plans are being developed for elementary,
middle-school and high-school students. The desire is to work with the Arizona Public
Education Department to ensure that these lesson plans meet the departments’ standards. These
lesson plans will be available on www.capitolchristmastree2009.org.
These ornaments will help depict our theme, “Arizona’s Gift, from the Grand Canyon State,” and
will provide wonderful opportunities for Arizona school children to demonstrate what Arizona
means to them. Whether they represent our world-renowned landscapes, our diverse cultures, or
other aspects of our state, the ornaments will help convey the particular beauty that is Arizona.
Ornaments made for the outdoor tree should follow these design criteria:
 9 to 12” in size, light weight, decorated on both sides with a large, relatively simple design,
so they can be enjoyed from a distance. Many will be placed high on the 65-foot tall tree.
 Durable and weatherproof for use outdoors for at least 3 weeks in wet and wintry conditions.
 Ready for hanging, with a 12-15 inch loop of 20 gauge (coat-hanger weight) wire attached to
top corners.
 Decorate with colorful materials that, if possible, are reflective. To minimize environmental
impacts, ornament makers are encouraged to use wood or recycled construction materials.
Ornaments made of glass are not acceptable.
 Ornaments cannot reflect a religious or political theme. Instead, share your interpretation of
our theme “Arizona’s Gift, from the Grand Canyon State.”
 Ornaments are used for one year then donated to charities, so while they should be
thoughtfully created, valuable artwork may not be appropriate. Ornaments can’t be returned
to the maker.
Students (K-12) who create the Capitol Christmas Tree ornaments will be eligible for a drawing
for a free trip, including parents, to Washington, DC to take part in the lighting ceremony in
early December. The selected student’s teacher or group leader will also win a free trip to
Washington, DC for his/her active participation in the ornament effort.
October 5, 2009 is the deadline to provide ornaments.
